ANNUAL NOTICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES The forty-two local school districts and eleven charter schools within the Allegheny Intermediate Unit offer a full continuum of special education programs and services to all students eligible for such services. Special education programs and services are available for eligible students between the ages of three (3) and twenty-one (21). Services for eligible children ages three (3) to school entry age may be requested by contacting your local school district, charter schools or the Allegheny Intermediate Unit at 412-394-5700. Services for eligible students of school entry age through twenty-one (21) years of age may be requested by contacting your local school district or charter schools. Special education programs available include services for eligible students who are identified as: Developmentally Delayed (Preschool only) Intellectually Disabled Learning Disabled Autistic/Pervasive Developmental Disorder Visually Impaired Hearing Impaired Mentally Gifted Multidisabled Neurologically Impaired Physically Impaired Seriously Emotionally Disturbed Speech and Language Impaired The forty-two local school districts and charter schools conduct identification activities to determine if students are in need of special education services. The forty-two local school districts and charter schools in conjunction with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit provide the above special education programs. Services for eligible preschool age children are provided through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. The forty-two local school districts and charter schools, conduct screening activities to identify students who may be eligible for special education services. Information about screening activities may be obtained by contacting your local school district or charter schools. Parents or guardians may request that their child be screened or evaluated for special education services. Requests for screening or evaluation should be made in writing and directed to your local school district or charter schools. All information collected as part of an individual student referral or evaluation is treated in a confidential manner. A written policy regarding the confidentiality of student records is available for review by contacting your local school district or charter schools. Printed information regarding available special education services and programs and parent rights as they pertain to special education is available in the building principal's office or the office of Superintendent of Schools. If additional information or the name of the individual to contact in the local school district is needed, you may contact the Allegheny Intermediate Unit at 412-394-5817.
